Higher Education (University +)

higher education
Bill asked:

I am currently working on a masters degree in education. I was a for three years and I am now a graduate in the office of campus life. Both of these positions will/have given be in higher education. I’ve been told that a masters in “something” and experience will be good for applying for jobs in higher education.

It depends on what exactly you want to do in higher education. If you want to be a professor, then a phd is necessary. If you want to be an administrator or department head, it depends on the university or college. Some of the large universities and colleges have doctoral level administrators, while 2 year and community colleges may have some master level administrators. With a masters you could be a college adjunct.

Also if you are looking at different functions such as business, hr, curriculum and instruction, or financial aid, to name a few, then you would want a masters in those specific fields to better your chances.

If you are wanting to work in Student Affairs, you probably want a degree in Student Personnel in Higher Education, Educational Leadership, or Higher Education Administration. Your work experience as an RA and GA will help you. It will be best to ask the personnel around you. They had to start somewhere. Joining NASPA and ACPA is also a good idea.
