American universities are the best in the world.

The public high school system is sub-standard in many inner cities, however.

i wouldn’t say the very best, but SOME of the very best
others would be India’s IITs, and the University of Beijing

While one could argue that the K-12 system in the US isn’t as strong as that of other developed countries, I would argue that their university system, as a whole, is stronger than that of any other country in the world.

There are fine, excellent, wonderful universities outside of the US. There are also other countries whose university system, as a whole, is seen as excellent. But the US really has the premier position in higher education.

Just a few examples to prove the point:
-If you look at any listing of the top 20 or so programs in any field, the majority from any one country are in the US. The MBA programs, for example (link, below.) The arts & humanities programs, another example (link, below.)
-Many foreign students tell me that it doesn’t actually matter where in the US they get their advanced degree, so long as it’s from a university in the US. It’s the “US” on their resume that has the impact. (Of course, this depends on their country of origin.)

But we’re talking in generalties. As a whole, the university system in the US is the strongest. But as a student, one has to look at individual universities, and individual programs of study. So, is Oxford (UK)’s MBA stronger than that of, say, Bentley College (US)? Yes. Is it stronger than that of Harvard? No.

And to your specific universities, I’d rank them as follows:
    -Harvard
    -Oxford or Cambridge
    -MIT

Again, speaking generalities. If you were talking about a specific field of study (say, engineering), that would change.

There are a lot of high quality universities outside the US, and some do attract large numbers of foreign students. Some of the best known, and best quality, include (in no particular order):
    -Oxford (UK)
    -Cambridge (UK)
    -London School of Economics (UK)
    -McGill (Canada)
    -University of Toronto (Canada)
    -INSEAD (France)
    -Indian Institute of Technology (India)
    -Tokyo University (Japan)
    -National University of Singapore
    -ETH Zurich (Switzerland)
    -Melbourne University (Australia)
    -Tsing Hua University (China)
    -Beijing University (China)
    -University of Paris Sorbonne (France)
    -La Sapienza University (Italy)

And many others. All of these are among the best universities in the world.
